Illinois Governor Signs Bill Broadening Open Meetings Law

Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed a bill that broadens the definition of a public meeting to include video, audio and e-mail conferencing. It requires that a quorum of the public body be present at a common location to make the meeting official. The bill was initially put forward by the Illinois Press Association because e-mail messaging with absent members was denying public access to discussions on issues. (8/17/06)
