An American Indian tribe filed a $60 million libel suit Tuesday against the New York Post because of editorials condemning the tribe’s alleged criminal history as well as its plans to build a new casino in upstate New York.

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Council is suing the Post over two editorials, one published in February 2007 and the other in January of this year, which called the tribe a “criminal enterprise” that has engaged in a nearly $700 million illegal smuggling ring and shoot-outs with the New York State Police.
