The Natural Resources Defense Council released documents that related these events: A year ago, 37 whales swam ashore and died along the North Carolina coast. At the time, the navy was conducting sonar system tests less than 200 miles away. A National Marine Fisheries Services official reported the sonar may have caused the whales to lose their bearings. The just released official report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration makes no mention of sonar. The Navy is in the final stages of public comment on a proposed Undersea Warfare Training Range in the area. (1/25/06)
