Josh Wolf, the 24-year-old blogger-freelance journalist who was jailed after he declined to turn over unedited video footage of a San Francisco protest demonstration, was released after 226 days in prison – the longest any journalist has ever been held on a contempt charge. Wolf first posted the unaired videotape on his website, making it available to public as well as prosecutors, who said Wolf had thus complied with the grand jury subpoena. His jailing stirred debate about who qualifies as a journalist and what legal protections they should receive. (4/3/07)
