In L.A., Lawsuit Settlement Memos Go Back in the Drawer

For many years, Los Angeles County lawyers have made public the memos they draft when advising supervisors whether to settle major lawsuits. The memos provide cogent explanations and strategies when taxpayers dollars were being spent to resolve claims. Now, the county lawyers are halting that practice, saying that plaintiff’s attorneys are using the memos to gain an advantage, and more money, in separate but similar cases. (7/9/07)
