“It was very clear that it was a cardinal sin to leak and that you’d better not.” That was the message a staffer recalled from a meeting with President Bush’s first Chief of Staff Andrew Card coming on board. A year later, Bush himself authorized the leak of until-that-moment classified information to reporters in an effort to counter criticism of his Iraq policies. A Chicago Tribune report explores the “double approach” to managing the news, a two-for that at least one critic calls a “selective approach to secrecy.” (5/3/06)
