Make Employee Performance Data Public, Iowa Senate Leader Urges

Iowa’s Senate Republican Leader, Mary Lundby, suggested the state’s open records law may need to be amended to give provide the public access to information on state employee performance. A 1992 Iowa Supreme Court decision held that “personal information” exempted from the records law included performance records, and in recent years that has been used to deny access to government records involving state troopers linked to a bribery scheme; a county deputy fired for assaulting his wife; a city police officer accused of sexual misconduct with a teenage girl; and a school bus driver fired for sexually inappropriate conduct with students.
