National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell said that fewer than 100 people in the United States are being secretly wiretapped as part of a controversial program aimed at disrupting terrorist networks. The number is one of the few details known about the program, which is overseen by an equally secret court. McConnell said that “thousands” of people overseas are having their phone conversations with people in the U.S. monitored. (8/23/07)
