A North Carolina legislator has introduced a bill that would make it a misdemeanor to withhold public records. Rep. George Cleveland said his bill was inspired by complaints of citizens whose records requests were denied. The current record law has no enforcement teeth, he said, with the result that “when someone locally does something stupid and doesn’t want to let the worlk know about it, they try to hide it.” (4/26/07)
