New Jersey Legislature Moves to Discourage Public Records Requests

A New Jersey Senate committee bought into the complaint of local tax assessors that they are overworked and approved legislation intended to slow the demand for property tax records by requiring citizens to file formal public records requests anytime they want to look at a property record other than their own. The formal filing is designed to discourage requests and thus reduce the work load. The bill was approved 4-1 by a Senate committee and goes to the full Senate. (2/9/06)
