New York City Will Identify Budget Earmark Sponsors

The speaker of New York’s City Council, Christine C. Quinn, announced that the council will start identifying members who sponsor discretionary appropriations – what some observers call pork. The total often runs to the hundreds of millions of dollars. A controversy over identifying sponsors of earmarked budget items at the state level was resolved several weeks ago when the state Supreme Court ruled the information public. (11/13/06)
