No Legal Basis for Much of Information Withholding, Top Official Testifies

The federal official charged with establishing information sharing policies said agencies do not have legal justification for most of the information they withhold from the public. “There is, quite frankly, much that has no legal basis and doesn’t deserve a legal basis. We should be getting that stuff out,” Thomas McNamara told the House Homeland Security Intelligence Subcommittee. He said there are currently between 65 and 70 different categories of information being withheld as “sensitive but unclassified.” (5/11/06)
