Officials in Erie County, New York won’t identify a local hotel that failed to pay $500,000 in bed taxes it collected from its patrons, claiming it would violate a provision in the 1974 county bed tax ordinance. However the director of the state’s Committee on Open Government says the state open records law preempts the local measure. (6/22/07)
