The New York Times said that it withheld publication, — for three years — of a story on clandestine efforts of the United States and Pakistan to protect nuclear weapons.  The disclosure came in the 11th paragraph of a Sunday story on the “highly classified” program, which the Times first learned about in 2004.  At the time, the White House asked that the story be withheld and the paper agreed.  But when the Times recently raised the issue anew, the White House withdrew its objection.  A National Security Council spokesman said details of the program had become known overtime and “there was no point in still maintaining our objection.” (11/20/07)
