The U. S. Patent Office, acting under the Invention Secrecy Act of 1951, issued 108 new secret patents in fiscal 2006 and rescinded the secrecy status of 81 others. As a result, there were 4,942 secret patents remaining in effect as of Sept. 30. The government has a property interest in most secret patent applications but according to Secrecy News 29 of the applications last year were “John Doe” filings. (11/6/06)
