Pennsylvania Expands Access to Online Court Records

New rules for Pennsylvania court records allow the public online access to information about people who have been charged with a crime but not convicted, despite objections from such groups as the Philadelphia Bar Association and the American Civil Liberties Union, who argued it could hurt people wrongly accused of a crime. However a spokesman for the court system noted that 14 other states already allow such access, as do federal courts. He that said that in areas of Pennsylvania were the online practice was already in effect, there have been no reports of abuses. (12/28/06)
