Pentagon Classification System Management Sloppy, GAO Says

The Government Accountability Office said a new study raises questions about whether the Defense Department’s marking of information as classified meets established standards. The GAO said that in a very limited sampling it found evidence of sloppy record management including marking as “Confidential or Secret” material that Pentagon officials acknowledged was unclassified information. The GAO questioned the classification designation on 29 of the 111 documents it reviewed. (7/14/06)
