In a lawsuit brought by the Associated Press, Federal Judge Jed S. Rakoff ordered the Defense Department to make public the names and nationalities of more than 500 military prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He rejected the Pentagon’s argument that release of the information would violate the prisoners’ privacy rights and expose them to retaliation by terrorist groups. The Pentagon had earlier released transcripts of 558 tribunal hearings but redacted identifying information. (1/24/06)
