At the urging of the Defense Department, Congress is considering a broad new provision in the 2008 Defense Authorization Act that would allow it to restrict public access to both federal and state-local government information that the Pentagon considers in some way related to weapons mass destruction or their potential targets. A second provision would make it a crime to publish or sell maps and images the Secretary of Defense considers sensitive. (4/24/07)
