Police Can’t Back Up Claims of Endangerment from Records Release

California law enforcement groups have been unable to produce a single instance in which disclosure of police disciplinary files endangered the life of an officer, the L.A. Times reported. Officials made the endangerment argument in persuading legislators to kill a bill that would have provided access to the records. In most California police departments, the disciplinary records had been public for decades. (7/5/07)
