The preservation and promotion of the Hunley, a Confederate submarine, has cost at least $97 million, 85% of that from tax dollars, The Columbia State reported after review of extensive records obtained from 20 South Carolina agencies through Freedom of Information law requests. Most of the money has been channeled from state agencies through the efforts of the Senate president pro tem, acting without portfolio. The overall cost so far is about 10 times the initial estimate and 50% more than the cost of renovating the state house. (5/15/06).
