San Diego’s mayor, Jerry Sanders, took office advocating greater openness in government but the Union-Tribune reports that almost a year later his record belies his promises. The detailed review highlights efforts to control the message by telling employees when they can, and can’t, talk with reporters, asking top officials to report media contacts, prohibiting department heads to be interviewed and channeling information requests through his office.
