The city of San Jose, CA, is debating whether to make public arrest reports and other criminal information routinely released in other cities. The city’s police chief and the district attorney’s chief deputy oppose the release, saying it would hinder crime fighting. The proposal comes from a Sunshine Reform Task Force which has proposed a number of measures to open city government. The California Public Records Act requires that some arrest information be made public but not the report itself. (9/25/07)
