Senate Committee Blocked 3 Secrecy Proposals in Defense Authorization Bill

Secrecy News notes that the Senate Armed Services Committee rejected three secrecy proposals that the Pentagon has inserted in the proposed Defense Authorization Bill. One would have expanded the ability of the Defense Intelligence Agency to disregard FOIA requests for whatever it designated as “Operational Files.” Another would have created criminal penalties for unauthorized disclosure or possession of maps that had been marked for “Limited Distribution.” A third allowed greater withholding of unclassified homeland security information.
