Sens. Patrick Leahy, D-CT, and John Cornyn, R-TX, have reintroduced their OPEN Government Act aimed at improving government performance in responding to Freedom of Information Act requests. Leahy said the bill provides “commonsense reforms to update and strengthen” FOIA and said he hoped the Senate would promptly pass the bill. The Senate Judiciary Committee, which he chairs, is expected to take the bill next week. The bill varies in several areas, including non-compliance penalties and the structure of an ombudsman’s office, from the House legislation.
