Last March, the American Civil Liberties Union filed a FOIA request for government documents that would show whether immigration laws, including a section of the Patriot Act, have been used to deny visas to prominent foreign scholars. Having had no response to its request from Justice, State, Homeland Security or the CIA, the ACLU, along with the American Association of University Professors and the PEN American Center, sued.
