Severe tribal libel law rescinded

The Reporters Committee has always warned journalists that the law, and particularly First Amendment rights, are treated differently on Indian reservations. But a rule enacted by the Rocky Boy’s Reservation in Montana set a new bar, allowing confiscation of property and banishment from the reservation for defaming tribal officials. Fortunately, protests within the reservation led to its repeal last month, as the Helena Independent Record reports.
