Sheriff Withholds 911 Tapes; Winston Salem Journal Sues

The Winston-Salem Journal is suing the Forsyth County Sheriff for refusing to release the contents of four hours worth of 911 calls made the night a man shot and killed three neighbors and was then shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy. The paper cited North Carolina law making the records, except for the caller’s identification, public. Sheriff Bill Schatzman said he would not voluntarily comply. (2/13/05)
