The House Judiciary in Washington State approved by a 10-1 vote a bill that would grant reporters an absolute privilege to protect their confidential sources. There was no debate. Washington is one of 18 states that do not have a reporter’s shield law, however its courts have ruled in favor of a qualified privilege based on the First Amendment and common law. (2/5/07)
