The Sioux Falls Argus Leader urged the South Dakota Supreme Court to order the governor’s office to make public the names of the invitees to the governor’s 2005 pheasant hunt, an event used to attract businesses to locate in the state. It’s official nature makes records of the event public, the paper argued. The Department of Tourist and State Development argued in response that there is no state law requiring the invitation list be kept, so it doesn’t fall under the public records requirement. That was the view of a lower court hearing the case. (4/25/07)
