South Dakota Legislature Considers Bill to Protect First Responder Records

A bill moving through the South Dakota legislature would allow accident information involving police and other drivers of emergency vehicles to be kept from the public. Proponents say bill protects the drivers from unfair scrutiny of their records when driving in extraordinary circumstances a normal driver doesn’t face. Opponents say the “blanket confidentiality” exceeds any possible public interest in protecting the information. (1/26/07)
