The Supreme Court refused to stop federal prosecutors from reviewing the telephone records in an effort to identify confidential sources of two reporters at the New York Times as part of an investigation into leaks of information involving a 2001 raid on two Islamic charities accused of funding terrorists. The Justice Department told the court the statute of limitations expires shortly on offenses the grand jury is investigating and that any delay would harm the probe. A district court initially held for the Times that the records could not be reviewed but this was reversed on appeal. (11/28/06)
