A spokesman for the military command in New Orleans said news media have “complete access” to the post-Katrina rescue and recovery operations along the Gulf Coast – as long as they are operating on their own. The clear implication of the comments made to a San Francisco Chronicle reporter, who had been stopped earlier, was that the military might insist on coverage limitations with those reporters given transportation or other military assistance.
