Army Memo Seeks to Restrain GI Bloggers in Iraq, Afghanistan

The contemporary security poster might show a nerdy enlisted man pecking away at his laptop, with the message: “Blog Babel Can Trip-Up Troops.” Instead, the Department of Defense has sent around a memo cautioning warfighters in Iraq and Afghanistan to be cautions in what they put on websites and blogs created in their free time. Steven Aftergood, director of the Federation of American Scientists Project on Government Secrecy said the memo “raises the prospect of a clampdown on independent reporting in military blogs” but Army officials said that was not the intent.
