The Office of Legal Counsel for the Department of Justice wrote three secret memos in May 2005 on legal issues relating to the interrogation of detainees in CIA custody. Two of those memos were reported by the New York Times in early October; the third just revealed in response to an ACLU lawsuit. The memos are believed to have authorized the CIA to use extremely harsh interrogation methods including waterboarding. (11/6/07)
