The Associated Press on Thursday retracted photos it obtained from the government and ran of two soldiers after learning the military had digitally altered the portraits.

A Texas news photographer notified the wire service of the misrepresentation, pointing out that the two photos, sent by the U.S. Army at Fort Stewart in Georgia, appeared to be identical except for the faces, names, and rankings of the soldiers, both of whom have died. San Antonio Express-News photographer Bob Owen said he especially noticed the similarities in the soldiers’ uniforms – the camouflage patterns were identical, Columbia Journalism Review reported.

The Associated Press confirmed that the images were altered and issued elimination notices on both photos.
