Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said that the government has the legal authority to prosecute journalists for publishing classified information, but he declined to talk about specific cases. Asked about the New York times disclosures of National Security Agency warrantless wiretapping, he said his department was studying “the appropriate course of action in that particular case.” (5/22/06)
