Sherrill v. Knight

  1. Newsgathering

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press filed an amicus brief along with co-amici the officers of the White House Correspondents Association, and the National Press Club in the D.C. Circuit in Sherrill v. Knight, a First Amendment and due process challenge to the Secret Service’s denial of security credentials for a reporter with The Nation. Amici argued that absent published and clear standards justified by a compelling state interest, along with notice and an opportunity for a hearing for a person denied such credentials, denials would violate the First Amendment.
