Update: On May 12, 2020, the Florida Department of Corrections stated in a letter that its Literature Review Committee decided on May 7 to overturn the impoundment of a recent issue of The Militant.

On May 4, 2020, the Reporters Committee sent a letter of support for The Militant urging a Florida prison Literature Review Committee to overturn a ban on a recent issue of the weekly socialist newsletter that was impounded for purportedly including photographs depicting “gang signs.” The photographs in fact showed protesters with raised fists. The Reporters Committee’s letter emphasizes that the publisher of The Militant and its incarcerated readers have a First Amendment right to send and receive the newsletter, and argues that overly broad justifications such as “safety and security” should not be used as a pretext for censorship.

Last October, the Reporters Committee sent a similar letter in support of The Militant after the Florida prison Literature Review Committee impounded six issues of the newsletter.
