California Supreme Court Upholds Public Right to Know in Two Cases
· Story link
The California Supreme Court ruled in separate “right to know” cases that the public has a right to inspect police hiring records and to review the salaries of government employees. The Los Angeles Times brought the police suit. Its reporter, investigating a tip that problem officers were moving from department to department around the state, was denied hiring data. The Contra Costa Times brought the salary suit after it was denied information on Oakland employees who earned $100,000 a year or more. (8/28/07)
