Connecticut Legislature Approves Shield Law for Journalists

A qualified shield law allowing reporters to protect confidential sources was overwhelmingly approved by both houses of the Connecticut Legislature just before the close of the 2006 session. A representative of Gov. M. Jodi Rell said she would sign the bill. Media companies and organizations had supported the legislation. Rep. James Spallone, D-Essex, vice chairman of the Judiciary Committee, said the goal of the legislation is to provide limited protections for reporters who use anonymous sources and whistleblowers to investigate sensitive, often controversial subjects.
