Cox Newspapers Seek Release of Immigrant Felon Information

Cox Newspapers argued in a federal appeals court that the public has a right to know if illegal immigrants convicted of serious crimes are being released back into the community rather than being deported as required by federal law. The Justice Department has refused to release the names of those released, saying it would violate their personal privacy rights and serve no public interest. The newspaper company wants to use the information to determine how many are slipping back into the community. (10/31/06)
