Dam: Information on Collapse Said to Endanger the Public

Fort Ann, New York is treating records on a dam that collapsed as confidential because making the information public has “the potential of adversely affecting security of the residents of the Town of Fort Ann, generally those living downstream from the dam and those members of the public at large who use the roadways that are subject to being impaired by the failure of the dam.” Robert Freeman, executive director of the New York Committee on Open Government, said the town’s position is “ridiculous. The dam is gone. How could public disclosure possibly endanger life or safety?” (10/31/05)
