U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff ordered the Defense Department to release the uncensored transcripts of Guantanamo detainee hearings. The transcripts contain the names of detainees in custody as well as those who have been held and later released. The Associated Press sued the Pentagon for the information after being given transcripts with the names redacted. The records cover 317 hearings. “We’re grateful to have a decision at last that keeping prisoner identities secret is against the public policy and the law of this country,” said Dave Tomlin, assistant general counsel for the AP.
