Florida Family Services Director Drops Fights to Close Records

The new director of Florida’s Department of Children & Families joined with a newspaper in asking a judge to release records in an abuse case and called a press conference to disclose possible abuse cases in an agency-contracted home for mentally ill juvenile offenders. Bob Butterworth, who championed open government when he was attorney general, also dropped 110 cases in which the agency was seeking to withhold records. Butterworth said the agency had acted in the past like it had something to hide. (4/18/07)
