Federal prosecutors asked a judge to order two San Francisco Chronicle reporters to identify the source who gave them grand jury testimony in the BALCO steroids investigation, saying the leak of information struck “at the very heart of the secrecy of grand jury proceedings and the integrity of the judicial system.” The attorney for The Chronicle said the government’s claim lacks merit: “The government itself turned over these transcripts for use in a criminal trial, and once they did that, under the law, the testimony no longer enjoyed the protection of grand jury secrecy.” (6/22/06)
