The Superior Courts in Los Angeles and Orange counties have for years allowed police to keep the only copy of search warrant affidavits, the Los Angeles Times reported. With no affidavit on record, critics of the practice said, police could change the document after the search to make it fit the case. The practice was revealed in an appellate court ruling on a search warrant case. (1/12/07)
