Newark Drops Its Law Suit Seeking Prior Restraint

The city of Newark withdrew a lawsuit seeking to prevent the Star-Ledger from publishing a confidential report that revealed widespread problems and corruption in the city’s police department. A Superior Court judge had earlier refused to immediately enjoin the paper, calling the city’s action “problematic on many levels.” The paper, which had published several stories about the report before the city filed suit, said it would seek legal fees if the city pursued the litigation.
