Now, 107 Ways to Mark a Document "Sensitive But Unclassified"

The official charged with simplifying and standardizing the federal government’s information sharing network says there are at least 107 unique “Sensitive But Unclassified” markings and 131 different labeling or handling procedures for the informationfor that information. Thomas E. McNamara, program manager for the Information Sharing Environment, told the House Subcommittee on Intelligence, Information and Terrorism Risk Assessment that the lack of a single, rational SBU framework contributes to “improper handling and over-classification.” His solution: start over from scratch.
