As Congress puts $8.5 trillion in taxpayer dollars toward rescuing institutions that have lost their financial footing, more than 70 open government and taxpayer-representative groups are urging transparency and oversight in the process.
In an open letter sent to all members of Congress, the groups asked the lawmakers to recognize the public’s right to know and "honor this by making sure that robust and effective oversight occurs and that all relevant records are collected and publicly available."
"Any credible solution to the economic crisis must be grounded in transparency," argued the groups, which encompass OpenTheGovernment.org and include the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.
